OpenID user authentication
... would allow those sites who use OpenID to directly correlate their users with their suggestions, and other neato stuff.
Hey there!
While we used to offer OpenID we found that it complicated the sign in process for the majority of our users. We know that there are some of you who feel strongly that continue to support this, but we can’t justify including it in our product. Thanks so much for your feedback on this and please, continue to leave more :)
Cheers,
Carter, Assoc. Community Manager

And, if/when you get OpenID working with the site, please please please give us a way to migrate our existing accounts over. I'd hate to lose my history in the process.

FYI, you can now use email addresses as OpenIDs by implementing the Email Address to URL Transform protocol (http://eaut.org) and backing with with emailtoid.net. I definitely would like to be able to use an existing verified identity than having to create yet another account.

Our users are complaining that they have dozens of different logins across dozens of different sites -- including here. Why not let them use an OpenID they already have?

What about SAML or some other SSO that does not require an OpenID? If this is going to be sold to corporations for use internally, it is going to need to be a seamless integration based on their authentication LDAP, AD, etc... Big market company to employee rather than just thinking company to consumer.

Actually, many people have an OpenID whether they know it or not. Anyone with an AOL or Yahoo account (for example) already one: http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/796-yahoo-accounts-become-valid-openids
Plus with Microsoft and Google joining the OpenID board I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same. -

keep in mind that openid isn't a widely deployed thing as of now. 99% of people will have to sign up- this time for an openid.
I'll repeat my suggestion here. If the site in question already has a membership system in place, let them pass a token when linking to UserVoice(I liked UserSuggest better) so that people will be signed in when they come in. -

Yes, OpenID has security issues. But so does any signin process. In this case, the point is to limit voting by the same person. Limiting by IP is bad when corporations use 1 or 2 IPs. Limiting by account is Ok, but forces users to sign up. Limiting by OpenID seems like a wonderful middle ground.

And those links don't even cover the usability aspects of signup and login, which I may have complained about a bit after a previous attempt. http://codelevy.com/articles/2007/10/02/openid-integration-pros-and-cons
Of course, all that said, we're still considering doing it again. :)
