Allow admins to merge duplicate suggestions
Sometimes, two or more suggestions that share the same basic idea gain traction and compete with each other although they should be promoting the same cause. If the page admins have the ability to merge such entries, the page will be much tidier and votes and comments will not be lost when the duplicate is deleted.
This is available now. For more information please read our blog post http://bit.ly/aw6rMb and/or log into your admin console.

it is important that the old comments/heading/description will be appended.
Cause what is the reason for a dublicate?: Someone didn't find the original, obviously cause it missed the right keywords. -

I've used the beta merge feature twice already. It really came in handy!

I think it is also important to allow someone (admin or author) to split apart a complex user voice idea into its component parts. Case in point: I recently encountered a uservoice idea for an iPhone app + data in a cloud for Personal Brain. I don't have an iPhone but am interested in Personal Brain data in a cloud and cloud computing allowing use from a host of remote devices. I believe cloud computing is a separate and bigger issue than iPhone app. I did start a new user voice idea but have garnered no other votes than my own. I am left to compete against this cloud concept wrapping in with very very popular iPhone app.

FourSquare's merge tool works quite nicely - once two items have been flagged as duplicates of each other, they are presented side by side. The admin chooses the one they want to keep and then all the data/votes etc. are merged.

A way to link two ideas and then auto merge the votes would be ideal I think. Something like this:
- Edit the status and set as duplicate
- Link the idea to another (the other idea then becomes the master)
- Auto merge the votes on the duplicate idea into the master -

This would greatly benefit everyone, not just admins

One way this could be done is for admins to be able to tag suggestions, having an interface to view tags which could be sorted by several categores: votes, most comments, status, ...

The ability to choose who the new author of the idea is and the creation date would also be awesome. We run a bunch of analytics around how ideas progress, making sure these stay consistent would be great despite being merged

and why not let users 'suggest' duplicates

This is really important. If someone feels strongly enough to add a suggestion and vote for it, I want to make sure their vote isn't lost even if they miss that the suggestion already exists.
