Segments for Features

When evaluating potential features, you can see how many total users and accounts want each item you're considering (i.e. the user reach of the feature).

With Segments, you can also see how many of your ‘target’ users and accounts want a feature, based on criteria specific to your business. For example, users on the Pro plan, accounts in the health industry, or enterprise companies.

Create a Segment

For our example, we will start with three assumptions:
  1. We have linked User Suggestions to a Feature
  2. Users have supported those Suggestions
  3. We have set up Accounts and connected users to those accounts (learn more here).
We want to know: How many of these users and accounts represent enterprise companies with an MRR of $1,000 or more?

Navigate to Segment Configuration

  • Click the Features icon (lightning bolt) in the left-hand menu
  • On the Features grid, click the "gear" icon on the right
  • Click the "Segments" tab
  • Click "Create Segment"
Create your Segment
  • Name: This is the title of the Segment and will be shown on the column header in the Features Grid.
  • Properties: The filters for your Segments.
  • Key: Only used for the API and export. We recommend leaving the default key in place.

Options for your Segment Properties (aka filters)

1. Choose a user or account field to filter by: In the first drop-down, you will see a list of all your available options. This includes any standard or custom User and Account Fields.
  • String and Text Fields: Filter based on an exact text match, and the auto-complete feature helps you find the correct values. If you want to filter by email, you need to enter the full email like joe@doe.com. Examples: Email field, Account Segment, User or Account name etc…

  • Number Fields:  Filter based on if the value is equal to, does not equal, is greater than, is greater than or equal to, is less than, or is less than or equal to a specified number. Examples: MRR, LTV or Potential MRR.

  • Boolean Fields: Filter based on if the value is True or False. Examples: Churned or Renewed.
2Allow multiple values: Click ‘OR’ and enter the next value.

3. Require matching values: Click the ‘And..’ drop-down and choose the next field and enter its operator and values.

In our Example, we've set the properties to Account Business Size (an Account Custom Field) equals "Enterprise" AND MRR (a standard Account Field) is greater than $1,000.  A User, Account and MRR column are now created on the Feature's Grid and reflect the Segment we've created.

Note: Segments are available to all admins, and shows on Features and Suggestions. The new columns will now show by default for all admins. Admins can hide or show columns by clicking the column picker on the right, and their choices will be remembered.

View and Sort by Segments

Your Segments will show on the Feature's Grid with a User, Account and MRR column.

You can choose to sort by a specific Segment to see which Features are most wanted by those users.

Build Scores with Segments

Use your Segments to build your Score which is used to help your team prioritize your roadmap. Learn more about Scores here.

Use Charts with Segments

You can also build out your Feature Chart using your Segments as the X-axis, Y-axis, or Bubble size.

Common Questions and Errors

Q: Can I build a Segment based on a date custom field?
A: Not at this time, but if you would like to see us add this functionality, please share your idea and use case on our forum.

Q: Why is a Segment showing 0 as a result?
A:
The Feature’s linked Suggestions have no users that match the properties set for the segment. We recommend checking your Segment filters to verify the correct filters and values and AND/OR conditions are in place.

Q: Can Segments do wildcard matches or "contains" on text strings?
A: Not at this time. If you would like to see us add this feature, please share it as an idea on our forums.

Q: Why don't I see the Features icon on my account?
A: If you're on the latest version of UserVoice, please verify with the Owner of your Account (the person on your team that has billing and settings access) that you have the necessary permissions for Features. If you are the Owner of the account, it's possible you're on an older plan. Please email support@uservoice.com to get a quote for upgrading to the latest version of UserVoice.
