Add option to turn on users' RECEIVE COMMENT UPDATES setting by default
In order to build up critical mass to where our UserVoice forum is really useful, it's important for our users to know that others are reading/commenting on their suggestions (otherwise they'll jsut stop making suggestions).
Setting the RECEIVE COMMENT UPDATE on by default would really help build this critical mass.
Yes, some people would object to the extra emails but in a small forum it wouldn't be too bad (and the users always have the ability to turn it off easily)

Your end-users can opt-in/out of comment notifications in their profile settings. By default they are opted-out. However, a UserVoice admin can change this default behavior in “Settings – Feedback Forums – Enable comment notifications by default”. If this setting is enabled by an admin, any new end-users will be automatically opted-in to comment notifications.

why is this completed? The notification possibilities are garbage

This should not be closed. The intent of this request was that users would find out about comments made on their suggestions. Simply having an obscure option for users somewhere that they will never set (in our experience, this is true) is not good enough. At the very least, administrators need to be able to turn this on for users and/or threads. But ideally, it should be the default that users receive comments on their own ideas (and can unsubscribe for particular ideas). This is fundamental functionality on just about every modern ticketing / forum implementation these days.

To me this is logical to default to this and users opt out. It is having a critical impact on our business being able to share feedback and sentitments about an item. We can only encourage users to update their settings, but can't force them to. Please bring in this change!!! :)

So sad this is not addressed.

@Petr no updates at this time, but it’s on our list of items to consider for our next quarterly roadmap.

*********, any updates on this? Thanks
-
AdminJoshua Rudd (Admin, UserVoice) commented
@Petr yes, that’s the general idea, though we may also give more control over which comments on an idea the user would be notified about (like when an admin is replying to your comment vs. getting notified of all comments on an idea).

*********, thanks for and udate! Does it mean that once a user creates, votes or comments an idea she will be automatically notified about its status changes and all its new comments added by admin or other users?

And what about changing the default value from UNCHECKED to CHECKED. It should be super easy to develop. We usually ask our UserVoice users through comments for more details about the ideas and would like to have a discussion with them. But now I find out why they do not respond, because they do not receive our comments! Having this setting UNCHECKED by default makes no sense to me. Please change the default value!
BTW: I can see an idea was inserted 3 years ago and there is no response or status update from UserVoice. What does it mean? What is your workflow of idea processing?

So if you, the admin, updates the STATUS and include a note there, people WILL get a notification and that message via email? But if you just comment, chances are they won't?
Sigh... I didn't realize that was the only way to ask questions/get more info and was using comments up til now and wondering why no one ever responded.

Here is that other thread:
http://feedback.uservoice.com/forums/1-general-feedback/suggestions/3013729-add-an-email-this-idea-link-in-ideasA new user would never think of visiting the settings to enable the comment notifications.
Maybe the comment textarea should have this subscription checkbox. -

I totally agree. At least the comment update flag should turn on automatically for an idea creator or anyone who commented on the idea.
A way for an admin to invite users to review an idea would be very useful also, but there is another thread for this I believe.

Hi Cinzia, we used to have comment notifications ON by default, but that caused a number of issues. For example, it didn't work well for active forums, where users could receive dozens of emails in a single day. Our email notifications would then get marked as spam, our agents would receive tickets about this, etc. We are, however, planning on adding more granular notification settings in the future, so we will definitely revisit your concerns at that time. Thank you for your feedback.

Thanks for the feedback, Cinzia. Currently, new users are automatically set to receive status updates (admin responses) to ideas, but not new comments.
I'll add your request for users receiving new comment notifications by default to our review process.

Hi Joshua,
It is true that the switching of this feature is already supported on the users' side, however there is not option to make this a default on the admin side. Ideally, what is needed is:- Admin can set the notifications being sent as default: this should include notifications on both comments and status update
- Users can then go and switch them off if they want (because no user will actually think of going and switch them on!)
- Admin can insert a default message to be sent in these notificationsAt the moment I'm doing all of this manually for every idea to ensure users are kept up to date.
I hope this makes sense?

I'd really like this too. Currently I'm having to send a message to users every time a comment is added to their comments, their ideas or ideas they have voted on. A simple setting enabling this and the ability to insert a default message would be great!

Allow users to receive notification of comments added to their suggestions. Currently users complain they had no idea we had added comments to the suggestions, unless we change the status of the suggestion.
