Allow users to upload their own profile pic
Be given the option to upload a photo rather than having to use the gravatar service.

I used my Facebook to originally create the uservoice account.. it used my profile on Facebook by defualt... so i disconnect it from facebook and uploaded a gravatar. It wont let me delete my avatar (its stuck as my facebook profile pic) and im using it for my business.

Agree with MC - people should be able to use their own avitars. I have a particular one I created for Twitter that I could use (or create another with my own pix), but am unable to do so.

When a new user signs up, pull their avatar from either the 3rd-part profile they sign up with (already done), or with Gravatar (already done), but then allow the user to update their avatar however they like.
People sometimes sign in with Facebook and then don't want their goofy Facebook photo on UserVoice.
People who want to be anonymous but have a Gravatar acount get their photos added to their profile.

Why should someone have to upload avatar on every site he uses? Instead, he can use Gravatar which means that he upload avatar only once and if he want to change it, he needs to change it only on one place.
Not to mention problems for website owners. They need to setup system that handles avatar: uploading, checking pictures, resizing, storage (it could take a lot for many users), additional load on server(s) (which could slow done site's main features) and, last, but not a least, a lot of (expensive) bandwidth that avatars use. Instead, they can simply add support for Gravatar http://en.gravatar.com/site/implement/
Other thing is that support for Gravatar on user's pages could be better, for example there could be link directly to sign-up page pre-filled with users e-mail address.

I just made a new suggestion to extend RPX to grab profile pictures, as per my previous comment. See http://feedback.uservoice.com/pages/1-product-feedback/suggestions/439718-extended-rpx-openid-login-to-grab-profile-pictur

Just realized you could probably achieve similar functionality using RPX/OpenID.
The basic version of RPX allows you to request a profile picture, the option to "Use the profile picture from this account" could be added underneath the list of providers on the UserVoice Login page (and selected by default).
That would be easier to implement than Incarnate. The advantage of Incarnate is no password is needed, you can just quickly see several options.

Would like to see an explanation of why this was declined. This seems to be a popular feature and though it does take a little work to handle uploaded images, resize, etc., it's not a ton of effort. There are services out there that can expedite the development (third parties that handle the upload/resize of media assets) if that's the concern.

Reinstate this idea.

Declined? It is essential.

Strongly agree. As an admin I've tried twice to setup a gravatar and failed (it's now even worse with the worpress account confusion) because I lost the will. Just upload an image!!

This is a good idea. Restricting avatars to the use of Gravatar means far fewer individuals will add their photo. UserVoice itself promotes the single sign-on concept, but the avatar feature requires one to get an additional account elsewhere (which involves researching whether or not the service is trustworthy, useful, fits one's needs, etc.)
Since photos are a way of contributing to the friendly nature of a community it can be argued that increasing the use of avatars through a more open system will increase the friendliness of communities harnessing UserVoice.
