Simplify admin login form (/admin/signin)
The login page is terrible UX. Why hide the username and password for your most valuable customers? Also why not just place username/pwd fields straight up on the page instead of a dynamic reveal. This confuses me every time.
Hi everyone! We recently rolled out improvements to our admin sign- in page (/admin/signin).
Those updates include:
-No more disappearing password field if an incorrect email is entered.
-If incorrect credentials are entered, we will give the standard message “incorrect email and/or password was entered.”
-Works with password management utilities.
If you have any questions or feedback on these changes, let us know!

Even worse than confusing me, this design is confusing my browser's auto-fill capability that was built to simplify the login experience so this non-standard UX/UI/IX is destructive to login experience with no obvious benefits.

Agree!
Many many of or users, both end users and admins, have problems logging in to our forum. The flow with the username (e-mailadress) field appearing first, and then, after typing the user name, the password text field appears, is very non-standard and is not always working. We have tried every browser, deleting cache etc to get through. But sometimes the password field just do not appear! We have explored clicking tab; clickin return; or do nothing after the first entry (user name text field), but it feels random how to get the password text field to appear. this may be a bug, but anyway the interaction design of this flow is a real blocker for us. Some users report that they need to try 20 before getting in to the forum. This is not acceptable. Please improve! -

The login box in the upper right corner of this forum (revealed by clicking "New and returning users may sign in") collapses when I enter an invalid password. I must click "sign in" again to see the error message.

I agree... this UI is strange and disorienting. As soon as I add my email address, the password field disappears. Then I get "Sorry, you don't have permission to access the Admin Console."
This also obscures the "forgot my password" option which what I would like to try next... but can't.

If a customer signs in with the wrong email address, we create an new profile for them.
This confuses the admin, and they can't figure out why they can't log in.
Also, if an admin signs in with the wrong email address OR creates a new user, the password field disappears.
To the user this now looks broken and they write into support complaining about our buggy sign in process.
3 Fold Solution....
1. Don't create new users from the admin log in form
2. Don't give green check marks or hide the password field
3. Instead, show the standard log in form, and if the user's credentials are wrong, tell them their password or email address is incorrect. -

When I click "Sign in" I'm presented with an email box. As I type some weird magic is happening which dynamically figures out if I'm an existing user or a new users.
If I type in my email wrong and plow through the form - I accidentally create a new account. If there is a connection delay I'm sitting there waiting for another password box to appear. I can't edit the username I entered in some scenarios. Copy/paste the username doesn't work. There is no browser user/password prefill.
Etc. Etc.
TL;DR: This is a clever approach which is a UX nightmare.
Suggestion: Make your sign in and sign up like every other of the 10 million websites in the world. A sign in block is for sign in - it has a username and password and a button. A sign up is a different workflow, access from a different place.
Let's not reinvent wheels so they are square.

I can't figure out how to login at all. As soon as you enter the user name the password field disappears.
