Subscribe to comments on specific ideas
Rather than an all-or-nothing setting for receiving comment notifications for all ideas an end user has voted or commented on, please allow the ability to subscribe to certain ideas for comment notification (similar to forum thread subscription).
When a user comments on an idea, they would (by default) be subscribed to follow-up comments on that idea.

This would be good, otherwise the ability to bookmark ideas so you could keep a separate view of ideas you want to keep a closer eye on. Atm we've created a custom field to follow up ideas and this also requires an internal comment so we remember why the idea has been set for follow up

As someone with Admin access, I find myself having to subscribe to an idea to be able to get updates about new comments etc.
A subscribe button from the Admin console would be nice. Ideally without increasing vote count, but if it's difficult you could just make it a vote button.

Bumping this idea.
Our previous solution offered this as an option. Our users miss that functionality. I see that Admins can subscribe but not users, so please include this!

Plus 338 votes from https://feedback.uservoice.com/forums/1-general-feedback/suggestions/35-allow-users-to-subscribe-to-suggestions "Allow users to subscribe to suggestions", which is marked 'completed' but really isn't.
Subscribing means 'get an email when there is an update / a new comment'.

Please also add a way to subscribe to ideas that I have not voted on, because I'm out of votes.
Not even adding a comment to a thread works for getting further notifications per email.> This is fundamental functionality
I completely agree. -

Without being admin, can I subscribe to any change in a specific project? Whenever a new idea is posted, I would like to look at it and vote for it or not if I agree with it.
I believe with this notification, I will be able to contribute often. It will also allow non admins to participate if they wish to drive new developments.

It would be extremely useful to be able to also subscribe to comments for ideas that you HAVE NOTcommented on.

In our experience, users simply don't think to look for and turn on a comment-notification setting. And in any case the settings should be:
1) automatically subscribe to comments on your own submitted ideas [on by default]
2) unsubscribe from comments on a particular ideaThis is fundamental functionality on just about every modern ticketing / forum implementation these days. Right now all of our idea forum topics go dead unless we change the status, since the submitting user never gets our comments or requests for clarifications.

If you only comment on an idea, you will not get notifications of status changes or other comments, since you are not a subscriber.

We literally switched to Zendesk due to this

This is critical. I've had to unsubscribe from a project that interested me because I was getting too many useless emails on threads that don't interest me much.

This seems like a huge oversight. If a user posts and idea, and an admin responds via a comment, the user would like to know that response has been posted.
Users are not going to keep coming to the site to check to see if anyone has responded.

What a great feature!. Especially when i seed ********* with ideas.
I would like to add the option of replying to ********* by email (just like the ticket system) so my users can reply straight from their email client.

Reviving an old post.
Echoing everyone's thoughts here. This will be a very useful feature if the notification for any comments received is turned on by default.
In an ideal forum, the OP should be informed by default of any comments that are being posted, be it admin comments or anonymous comments. I can totally imagine a scenario happening like someone mentioned here before where one of the customer was completely unaware of the comment that was made on a post. -

I agree that a user who either creates or comments on an idea should by default start getting any comments that are posted to it. I agree it should be easy for them to opt out.
I would also like to see users given the option to get notified for a new idea that gets posted to the forum. This would be something they would opt into. Then if they vote or comment the default of getting more notified of any updates to an idea would go to them by default.

It seems like if you post an idea, you want to hear discussion and the status of the idea.
Getting notifications seems like a smart default option, with an easy way to opt out. Otherwise as an admin I have no idea whether they're receiving comments - I had this scenario happen just two days ago. A customer that I ran into asked if he got my feedback that he left a month ago. I had replied within 30 mins of him leaving it, assuming he received the feedback... he hadn't, so I felt like a ******* for assuming that UV would email comments to him.
Feeling uncertain and / or foolish in front of customers are not great emotions to be feeling when I think of using UV.

I would also find this feature useful. None of our users have checked off that option to be notified of new comments. My guess is that they didn't notice it because they have to click the settings link under their profile after they sign up. New users just want to be able to post an idea so once they create their account they can do that. They most likely don't realize that they need to click the Settings link to get notified of new comments. We have talked to a few of our customers and confirmed that this is the case.
I can understand the reasoning of not wanting to overwhelm users with comment updates, but I do agree that by default they should get notified of any comments done by an administrator in the admin. Having to update the status just to ensure that a comment gets noticed by users seems hacky.

Right now, users are only notified if an Admin updates an idea or sends out a message. Users have to go into settings and choose to be notified of all comment updates before they will be notified of an Admin's comment.
However, it would be helpful if they were also notified of an Admin's comments by default as well. Sometimes the Admin doesn't want to update the status yet.
